Perched atop a hill on Pleasant Street in the small, southern Johnson County town of Edinburgh is a brick, Italianate mansion. This year the home turns 145. In the holiday spirit

Society is embracing a more health-conscious lifestyle. Many of us are scrutinizing what we put in our bodies and making an effort to get back to the basics and fill our dinner tables with nutritious, wholesome options. Well … although all of us at South magazine fully support the health movement, that’s not exactly what this feature is about.
In this issue’s cuisine section, South magazine honors all-things indulgent. There are just some times when one needs to loosen the belt, stop the calorie counting and dive into an honest, made-from-scratch, totally bad-for-you sweet temptation. And what better time of year to do so than winter and its holiday season?
It’s a time to celebrate. To some that means splurging on a decadent layer cake with a warm cup of coffee or cider. Others prefer to top off the night with a rich, sippable cocktail.
Whether you’re a straight chocoholic, have a weakness for the traditional or prefer to expand your palate with gourmet creations, chances are at least one item in this feature will hit that sweet spot. The southside’s culinary artistry abounds in the dessert and drink category with local chefs and mixologists, each masters in their genre. So we thought we’d delve into the dessert menus of some of the area’s most popular restaurants. Find out what’s behind that must-have slice of heaven at your favorite dinner spot or if it’s worth trying that odd concoction you’ve been eyeing but never had the courage to order.

Teenage garage bands come and go, but every once in a while, a group of young, aspiring musicians gets together and ultimately creates something special. We found four such bands on the southside.
