Dump Your Plump program encourages healthier living through diet and exercise – and some upbeat competition

Long before chef Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution” or “The Biggest Loser” came on the scene to motivate healthy lifestyles, a Johnson County alliance took aim and hit the target in making weight loss fun for area residents using a team concept and plenty of incentives. “Dump Your Plump” was introduced in 2004 by Partnership for a Healthier Johnson County, a healthy community coalition located at Johnson Memorial Hospital with support from St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers, Community Health Network, the Johnson County Health Department and hundreds of individuals and businesses.

Annual advancements made by medical researchers flood the news while bringing hope and options to physicians and patients. It is no coincidence that many of these same developments also apply to veterinary science. The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that people own more than 72 million dogs and 82 million cats in the United States alone. Seventy-eight percent of these animals’ owners consider them as surrogate children. Considering these staggering numbers, the task of preserving a beloved family pet’s health is immense. However, southside pet owners can rest assured. In this issue’s FOCUS section, South explores the advancements in technology available to veterinary professionals.

Bagging the elusive getaway
Family’s hunt for country solitude ends at log retreat

In some ways, Brian Bauer is a very private person. In fact, as president, CEO and sole owner of Indianapolis-based Phenix Investigations Inc., a company that specializes in corporate surveillance and undercover work, it could be argued the Greenwood resident has made quite a successful career for himself by simply flying under the radar. However, while Bauer and his Brazilian-born wife, Simone, admittedly enjoy times of peace and tranquility, they also relish time spent with family and friends. So, perhaps it’s only fitting that the Bauers and their two children recently built a secluded log home in southern Indiana that allows them to entertain guests in an almost wilderness-like setting while escaping the hustle and bustle associated with city life.

The desire to help others and to be an active part of the community in which he lives seems to come naturally to Franklin resident John Auld. In fact, as a widely recognized civic leader, the president of Franklin Insurance has succeeded both personally and professionally in finding ways to lend a helping hand to those in need. Over the years, through countless hours spent attending meetings, organizing activities and volunteering his time, Auld has often played a major role in developing, coordinating and implementing a variety of initiatives in and around Franklin that have ultimately proven beneficial to other individuals, groups and organizations. Last fall, however, to his surprise, the tables were turned on Auld as he suddenly found himself benefiting from the work others had secretly been doing on his behalf.
