something to taco ’bout

By Jenny Elig

Although you cannot throw a rock on the southside and hit a taco joint, let’s admit it: TexMex food is plentiful here. No doubt you have your favorite spot and maybe it’s one of the following. Or perhaps we just found your new Taco Tuesday spots.

» Tacos al Pastor, La Cocina
Franklin’s La Cocina offers a small but strong selection of tacos. We’re folding for the tacos al pastor: three soft tortillas filled with marinated pork, onion and cilantro, served with rice and beans. The fiesta is at 912 N. Morton St., Franklin, (317) 346-0717, lacocina-franklin.com.

» Fajita Taco Salad, Lindo Mexico
You might be thinking, “What? A salad on a taco list? Get out of here!” We will not. With its crisp tortilla bowl filled with strips of chicken or steak (your choice), bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, sour cream, lettuce and beans, this salad has every right to be on this list (and some veggies never hurt anyone). Enjoy it at 997 E. County Line Road, Greenwood, (317) 859-1336, inlindomexico.com.

» Tacos Chorizo, Luciana’s Mexican Restaurant
Picture this: corn tortillas laden with homemade chorizo, topped with cilantro and onions, served with spicy tomatillo salsa, rice and refried beans. Of course, Luciana’s has so many taco options, it’s hard to choose. If you’re having similar difficulties, try the tacos trio, with one each of the chorizo, carnitas and steak tacos. The taste awaits you at 1133 N. State Road 135, Greenwood, (317) 743-8925, lucianasmexicanrestaurant.com.

» Lettuce Wrap Tacos, Leon Mexican Cuisine
Maybe you went keto for the new year. Maybe you’ve eaten a lifetime’s worth of taco shells and just want something different. We’re not here to judge, merely to offer options. Enter Leon’s lettuce wrap tacos, which sub out the taco shell for, yes, lettuce. Folded inside you’ll find sauteed bell peppers, tomatoes, corn, onions and either chicken, steak or shrimp. We would be remiss if we didn’t also give a nod to Leon’s shark tacos, which feature fried shark tenders covered in smoky salsa and pico de gallo. You’ll find both at 1241 N. Emerson Ave., Greenwood. (317) 893-2581, leonmexicancuisine.com.

» The Paul Bunyan Taco, Roscoe’s Tacos
The devotion is real; a southside favorite since 1996, Roscoe’s Tacos serves burritos, nachos, salads and sides as well as tacos. Of the four options, the Paul Bunyan taco is what we’d like to tuck into. It features ground beef chili topped with sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and onions, all in a big crunchy shell. You’ll find Roscoe’s at 642 S. Madison Ave., Greenwood, (317) 859-0043, roscoestacos.com.
