new store features eclectic, local decor

You might have caught or binged the HGTV show “Good Bones,” which highlights home renovations around Indianapolis by the Two Chicks and a Hammer team of mother Karen Laine, now retired, and daughter Mina Starsiak Hawk. Now, a Fountain Square boutique will put you in touch with the series’ looks — in your home.

Two Chicks District Co., 1531 S. East St., Indianapolis, a home decor store and bistro that opened in June, features just about everything from statement pieces like furniture, rugs and wall art, to finishing touches like vases, plants and candles, plus jewelry, kitchenware and souvenirs like locally designed T-shirts and pins.

Kelsy Gray, chief business officer of Two Chicks and a Hammer Inc., helped get the store, owned by her sister, Starsiak Hawk, off the ground after about two years of planning. Regardless of one’s tastes, Gray says, they offer various styles of decor, each with the “Two Chicks twist.”

“Whether it’s mid-century modern, farmhouse, eclectic or whatever the house’s vibe is, we add color, textures and layers,” Gray says. “We put our own stamp on things, no matter the style.” For those who are seeking help with their choices, she adds, there will soon be options for private shopping and consultations with design experts.

Although many of the pillows, rugs and furniture are from larger manufacturers, boutique founders wanted to continue to support local artists and businesses. Gray also hopes the bistro will not only serve those who travel to the store as a destination but will also become a neighborhood hangout featuring regular events and specials. Fans can stay in the House that Two Chicks Built, an Airbnb they renovated, located a couple of doors down from the store.
